Fodor's Review

This chain of noodle houses serves hand-pulled noodles and traditional local dishes in a lively, old-time atmosphere, with waiters shouting across the room to announce customers arriving. Try the classic zhajiang noodle, served in a ground-meat sauce with accompaniments of celery, bean sprouts, green beans, soybeans, slivers of cucumber, and red radish.

Argh! You're kidding, right?

My husband and I went to the Old Beijing Noodle King on our last trip in July. Boy, were we disappointed!! The atmosphere is fun, loud, smokey and did I mention loud? Seems to be mostly men eating there and I'm surprised there were so many local men - could there be repeat customers? Everyone seemed to be getting the same dish. A big bowl of plain noodles and about 12 little dishes of things that the waiter tosses on top. It is quite a little

show. But we go to restaurants for the food not the show. The noodles were cold, stiff, horribly thick and uneven in appearance. The dark, dark, sauce that goes over it all reminded me of Marmite. Was that what it was? Thick and super salty, with little other flavor. You couldn't actually mix the sauce evenly over the noodles because of the consistancy of the sauce. You could only glob it on. We actually couldn't eat it. Chinese food can be so delicious. This was so crude with terrible flavor and stone cold. Inedible. Sorry. I won't go back.
