Fodor's Review

You can dine in imperial style at this extravagant courtyard villa on the shore of Beihai. Established in 1925 by three palace chefs, Fangshan serves elaborate dishes once prepared for the imperial family, based on recipes gathered across China. The place is best known for its filled pastries and steamed breads—traditional snack foods developed to satisfy Empress Dowager Cixi's sweet tooth. Banquet-style set meals are also available starting at Y228 per person. Be sure to make reservations two or three days in advance.
