Beijing Hotel

$$-$$$$, Dongcheng District

User Rating: **** 4.4

Fodor's Review:

One of the capital's oldest hotels, this property was born in 1900 as the Hotel de Pekin. Within sight of Tiananmen Square, it has housed countless foreign delegations, missions, and friends of China, such as Field Marshal Montgomery from Britain and the American writer Edgar Snow. China's longtime premier Zhou Enlai stayed and worked in room #1735. The rooms retain an old-fashioned splendor with French-classic touches. The west wing -- now the Grand Hotel -- was added in 1955 and the east wing debuted in 1974. This is the place for people in search of some history or proximity to nearby tourist sites, such as Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.

You'll be safe staying here, even without a safe...

Stayed here in the west wing (1955 addition) with a tour group in September 2004. Upon arrival, we discovered that our room safe didn't work and we were upgraded from a standard two double bed room to a larger king room with a separate dressing area. We quickly discovered that the safe in this room also was not secure as it was just sitting on the floor, allowing it to be removed easily. Quickly decided that we'd keep the better room and live without a safe! The options provided in the large and spacious breakfast area were to die for.... so many choices! Shopping options galore with many small shops offering quality items to match any budget. Wide expansive walkways with high ceilings and marble columns make the lengthy walking distances within this facility a visual treat. Although a vast number of people stay here, I strongly disagree with the poster who equated his experience to a Las Vegas venture. The atmosphere is multi-cultural and far more high end. Security guards stand at all hotel entrances and greet you as you come and go. Located within easy walking distance of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, you are in the heart of the tourist mecca.
