Phnom Penh
Bus Travel
Phnom Penh has a half dozen or more private bus companies with regular service from all major Cambodian cities. Major bus stations include the Central Market, Sisowath Quay near the ferry port, and the Hua Lian Station near the Olympic Stadium. Mekong Express charges a little more than other bus companies, but routes are direct and buses are clean and comfortable, with onboard tour guides and bathrooms. Most long-distance bus tickets cost $3 to $10, depending on the destination and distance.
Tickets can be purchased at the bus companies' offices or through most hotels and guesthouses.
Note that some bus companies advertise a direct Phnom Penh-Bangkok ticket, but that trip takes 20 hours on rough roads, so it's not recommended. Minivans are often a better way to travel, but ensure that the driver doesn't oversell the space and leave you sitting atop assorted produce and livestock. Minivans go to all major, and some minor, destinations within Cambodia. Minivans travel between the Lao border (at the Cambodian immigration point) and Stung Treng (about two hours), where you can catch a bus to Phnom Penh.
