The World Review
Riding out his success with real estate sales on Palm Jumeirah, Nakheel (the developer) launched The World, a series of 300 artificial offshore islands shaped like various continents, countries, and cities, each surrounded by its own pristine beach. The project targets the superrich, offering them ownership of a private island where they can create their dream home. Several luxury island resorts are included among the private domains, but with no road linking them to the mainland they're as exclusive as you can get.
The skeleton structures of The World islands were completed in January 2008 and about half of the real estate has now been sold. In addition, Nakheel has announced it will invest in Coral Island—a residential and resort community surrounding a tropical marina and beach—and an Irish consortium is building an "emerald isle"–themed development. However, details about the purchasers of private islands remain a closely guarded secret.
