Spier has undergone some serious restructuring and ditched some of its touristy trappings, which is probably a good thing; you can spend a very happy day here. This is one of the oldest farms in the area, established in 1692 on the banks of the Eerste Rivier. The farm produces excellent wines, which go from strength to strength. The latest flagship wine is the Frans K. Smit 2008, named after its winemaker. Also try the 21 Gables Chenin Blanc—the 2013 looks set to be
a winner. The 2012 Pinotage in the 21 Gables range is also excellent. The farm's owners value biodiversity and arts and culture: their enormous art collection is open to the public, and their farm-grown produce is used in the restaurant, Eight, and the deli. You can also order a picnic and enjoy it on the banks of the river. Visit Eagle Encounters, an on-site rehabilitation center for raptors—your kids will never want to leave.
