Somerset West (Helderberg) Travel Guide

Sports and the Outdoors

Erinvale Golf Club. The Gary Player–designed Erinvale Golf Club is beautifully nestled beneath the Hottentots Holland Mountains. This world-renowned course hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf, and, not surprisingly, the facilities are top-notch. Nonmembers can play on visitors' days: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Lourensford Rd., Somerset West, 7129. 021/847–1144. www.erinvalegolfclub.com. 18 holes. 6,782 yds. Par 72. Greens fee: R950. Facilities: driving range, putting green, golf carts, rental clubs, golf academy/lessons, restaurant, bar.

Somerset West Golf Club. Set against the Helderberg Mountains, Somerset West Golf Club has breathtaking views. This parkland course is easy, with plenty of leeway for errant tee shots, except when the wind blows. Look out for the resident white squirrels at the first nine holes. Rue de Jacqueline Ave., Somerset West, 7129. 021/852–2925. www.somersetwestgolfclub.co.za. 18 holes. 6,498 yds. Par 72. Greens fee: R350. Facilities: driving range, putting green, golf carts, caddies, rental clubs, golf academy/lessons, restaurant, bar.
