Husband-and-wife team Anton and Tarryn de Kock run a top-notch establishment on the banks of the Klein River just 10 minutes from Stanford and 30 minutes from Hermanus. Blue Gum is a world away from the Hermanus crowds and a wonderful place to relax. The rooms are individually decorated in a style best described as English country house meets colonial African. Mosquito nets, fluffy white pillows, crisp white linens, and dark wood will make you feel a little like a 21st-century
Karen Blixen of Out of Africa fame. Blue Gum Estate has two restaurants: the more informal Barke and the Blue Gum Restaurant (dinner only). The Blue Gum Restaurant serves a superbly tender beef fillet with spicy potatoes, roasted beetroot, and butternut squash. Weather permitting, you can have pre-dinner drinks outside around an open fire. Barke's menu comprises dishes such as rare roast beef with caramelized onions and whole-grain mustard on homemade bread, and grilled chicken with butternut gnocci and thyme sauce. Breakfast is served at Barke. On the estate you can fish for trout or walk around the small vineyard with the resident dog. The Country Villa, equipped with its own swimming pool, caters to families and can sleep up to 10 people.
