Mogg's Country Cookhouse

Mogg's Country Cookhouse Review

Don't be put off by the bumpy dirt road heading up the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. This restaurant on a fruit farm at the top of the valley is worth any amount of dust and corrugations. The converted laborer's cottage is as pretty as a picture in a tumbledown, overgrown kind of way, and the food is excellent in a relaxed and friendly setting. The seasonal menu is scribbled on a chalkboard. For starters you could expect beef carpaccio with a caper-and-olive dressing and pecorino cheese, or avocado-pear salad with hot walnut dressing and a sprinkle of blue cheese. Main courses might include chicken breast stuffed with tomatoes, olives, and feta and wrapped in phyllo, or homemade slow-roasted lamb shank accompanied by parsnip-potato mash with a mint-and-rosemary sauce. For dessert, homemade vanilla or Cointreau ice cream is served with a hot chocolate sauce. You're welcome to take your own wine, and it doesn't charge corkage, an added bonus.
