Nestled against the base of Helderberg Mountain and shaded by giant oaks, the peaceful Rust en Vrede winery looks over steep slopes of vines and roses. This is a comparatively small estate that specializes entirely in red wine—and produces some of the very best in South Africa. Rust en Vrede Estate is the flagship wine, a blend of predominantly cabernet sauvignon, Shiraz, and just over 10% merlot grapes. The 2004 vintage is the current hot-seller, having already won several awards both locally and abroad, but it would do well to mature in the bottle for another 10 years or more. Another interesting wine is the Shiraz, which has an inviting, spicy bouquet with a mellowness imparted by the American oak in which it is matured, but none of the characteristic cloying sweetness; it will age from five to eight years, and the 2004 vintage is currently available.
