Tokara
Tokara Review
Perched on the crest of the Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, Tokara is the brainchild of banker G. T. Ferreira. For a city slicker with lots of money, he's done everything right by employing an excellent winemaker in the super-sexy Miles Mossop and paying careful attention to the quality of his vines. At the 2009 Decanter World Wine Awards, Tokara scooped two golds and five silver medals, which is testimony to his excellent wine making. The farm produces under two labels—Tokara and Zondernaam (meaning "without name" in Old Dutch)—and the reds are big and powerful. The flagship red, a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot, and cabernet franc, is well worth taking home. It also has farms in the cooler Elgin and Hemel-en-Aarde regions, which means it can produce a stunning sauvignon blanc with plenty of complexity. Tokara also produces its own premium olive oil, which you can buy from the Olive Shed on the farm. Tokara's restaurant is a foodie's delight.
