If you want to see an elephant, your best bet is the Elephant Sanctuary. Knysna Forest once harbored large herds of elephants, but hunting and habitat encroachment almost put an end to the wild population. At one time it was thought that there was only one old matriarch left, so a few young elephants were relocated from Kruger to keep her company and—with luck—breed. The new ellies couldn't cope with the forest, however, and after they wandered into farmland, the project was abandoned. Since then, more elephants, including a few young ones, have been found deep in the forest, but since they're not venturing near the more-traveled areas, it's extremely unlikely that you'll see one. Still it's nice to know they're there. At the Elephant Sanctuary you can go on a guided forest walk with these amazing animals, touch them, learn more about them, and take a short ride.
