Featherbed Nature Reserve

Featherbed Nature Reserve Review

Unlike its eastern counterpart, the western side of the Heads, part of the Featherbed Nature Reserve, is relatively unspoiled. In addition to a bizarre rock arch and great scenery, the reserve is home to various small mammals, more than 100 species of birds, and 1,000 plant species. There are two standard trips here, plus more in high season (generally October–April). The morning trip costs R375, leaves at 10, and lasts four hours. It consists of a ferry ride across the Lagoon to the Western Head, a 4x4 tractor ride onto the reserve, and a guided 2.2-km (1.3-mi) downhill walk through the Reserve and along the coastline. After this there's a buffet lunch under the trees. The afternoon trip leaves at 2:30, costs R260, takes three hours, and is identical except that it does not include lunch.
