Golf

Humewood Golf Course. Consistently listed as one of the country's top courses, the challenging championship Humewood Golf Course is set in undulating dunes on the edge of Algoa Bay, making it one of South Africa's few natural links courses. The late South African golfer Bobby Locke considered it the finest course in the country and compared it favorably to the best of British links courses. At 7,030 yards and exposed to stiff sea breezes, it's not for the fainthearted. Marine Dr., Summerstrand, 6013. 041/583–2137. www.humewoodgolf.co.za. R375 for 18 holes; R250 for 9 holes. 18 holes, 7030 yards, par 72.

St Francis Links Golf Course. This beautiful and unique links course was designed by the famous American golfer Jack Nicklaus, and appears regularly on many of South Africa's top 10 golf course lists. It's a varied, undulating, and very challenging course that has been designed to mirror the terrain on which it was built; the shape of the greens comes from the natural contours of the sand beneath, and the course incorporates various wetlands areas and weaves its way between dense outcrops of indigenous fynbos as well as along parts of the rugged coastline of St Francis Bay. There's also a decent family-friendly clubhouse restaurant and bar. Lyme Rd., St Francis Bay, Cape St Francis. 042/200–4500. www.stfrancislinks.co.za. R350 for 9 holes, R550 for 18 holes; club rentals R290. 18 holes. 7,874 yds. Par 72.
