Fodor's Review

The main (but certainly not the only) attraction of this vibey backpackers' lodge are the surfing lessons (R50 for two hours, including surfboard and wet suit)—possibly from former world pro-am surfing champion Dave Malherbe, who moved here so he could surf the perfect wave whenever he wanted. You need to book pretty far ahead to secure the rooms with private bathrooms, although the shared facilities are decent. Accommodation is in private single or double rooms, dormitories or camping, and there are traditional thatched huts across the river offering double en suite and dorm accommodations. The private rooms were renovated last year and are much improved. As at all backpacker lodges, you don't need to be young to stay here, but an open mind and a sense of fun are prerequisites. The kitchen serves three meals a day at reasonable prices, and there are two well-equipped kitchens for self-catering. Guided trips include cultural tours (R90), and hikes, including one to Hole-in-the-Wall (R80).
