Tswalu Kalahari Reserve

  • Nature Preserve/Wildlife Refuge

Updated 11/11/2014

Fodor's Review

This reserve northeast of Upington is one of the most child-friendly game reserves in southern Africa. Children are welcomed and well catered to, with lots of freedom and special activities. No other game reserve offers such flexibility, and the dedication of the field guides and butlers here allows you to plan your days as you please: you might prefer a Champagne breakfast in your stunning accommodation to going out on a game drive, or you may want to sleep under the stars on the "Malori" open deck. The reserve plays a particularly important conservation role: backed by funds from the De Beers family, its desert black rhino population represents one-third of South Africa's entire remaining animals. In addition to rhino sightings, the interactive experience with the meerkats is a highlight when staying at Tswalu, as are visits to 380,000-year-old rock engravings from the earliest residents of these phenomenal landscapes.

A stop on your game drive from one of the many spacious hills

affords a peace and serenity not often experienced in Africa, as you sip sundowners on red dunes while the typically sensational sunsets are the cherry on top. The reserve is a must-visit if you're in the area, and there are easy connections via Johannesburg by charter flight. Kuruman is the nearest town.
