Fodor's Expert Review Plains Camp Tented Safari Lodge

Off Marula Loop, Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Editor's Note: This location is reported to be under new ownership and therefore this review may contain inaccuracies.

Overlooking a waterhole amid an acacia knobthorn thicket deep in the heart of the Timbitene Plain, Plains Camp has four comfortably furnished tents with wooden decks and great views of the plains. The concession, which comprises about 30,000 acres of pristine bushveld, shares a 15-km (9-mile) boundary with MalaMala, in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, and there's plenty of game movement between the two. A deck with a bar and plunge pool is great for post-safari get-togethers, and there's a small tented dining area. It's known most, however, for its guided walking safaris. A ranger (who is armed) will bring you in close contact with the bush and its denizens. You can also go on a sleep-out, sleeping on a raised platform in the middle of the bush under the stars.

PROS

  • right in the middle of Kruger
  • great game
  • fabulous night drives when everyone else in the Kruger camps is confined to barracks

CONS

  • surroundings a bit bleak, especially in winter
  • not much privacy between tents
