Maropeng Visitor Centre

Fodor's Review:

The impressive Maropeng Visitor Centre comprises displays, interactive exhibits, and even an underground boat ride through the elements of water, air, wind, and fire that the kids will enjoy. Maropeng means "returning to the place of origin" in Setswana, the area's main indigenous language. It's a one-stop tourist destination with restaurants, a boutique hotel, arts-and-crafts market, and interpretative center, and you can attend cultural events in its amphitheater. The exhibits are vast, and are mostly housed in a giant underground chamber. A large area is dedicated to human evolution, and the lifelike models of human ancestors draw much attention. Visit the Web site for a downloadable map of the area.

  • Cost: R80
  • Open: Daily 9-5; last boat ride at 4
