Fodor's Review:

The Origins Centre based at the University of the Witwatersrand is a modern museum dedicated to exploring human development over the past 100,000 years, and in particular the tradition of rock art—of which Southern Africa has some of the richest and oldest in the world. It's complementary to Maropeng, which details the past 4 million years or so of human evolution, and the history of earth since its formation. The two experiences enhance one another rather than compete. Origins is spacious and elegantly designed, with multimedia displays, photographs, and text catering to a range of tastes, from kids to visiting professors. The shop sells high-quality crafts and hard-to-source books on rock art in southern Africa, and Café Fino serves good, light meals.

  • Cost: R45, including audio tour
  • Open: Mon.-Thurs. 9-6, Fri. 9-8, weekends 9-5
