Northern Suburbs

Most of the city's good hotels and major malls are in the northern suburbs: Melville (closest to the city center), Greenside, Parkhurst, Sandton, and Rosebank, among many others. The burgeoning "new north," comprising Fourways, Kyalami, Midrand, and others is farther north. This area has been expanding rapidly since the 1990s, causing an almost continuous traffic snarl-up. There are no must-see sights (though Montecasino is a popular attraction), but the shopping is good.
