Fodor's Expert Review AmaKhosi Lodge
Pongola, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa
This spectacular lodge overlooks the Mkhuze River in the heart of northern KwaZulu-Natal, where birdlife is abundant and the Big Five are all present. Rangers work hard to find game rather than rely on animals habituated to vehicles, as at some of the older camps. Superb air-conditioned suites (large enough to swing a very big cat) have huge decks from which you can survey the river below; two are in a separate house. The staff excels, and the food would put many a posh restaurant to shame. Dine under the stars on a sprawling deck overlooking the river, in a gracious dining room if the weather is inclement, or in the staff-built branch-enclosed boma by a crackling fire.
PROS
- unique nighttime frogging expeditions
- outstanding game drives
- top-notch service
CONS
- off the beaten track
- no lunch option, though breakfast and high tea are substantial
- if there's a family with a rowdy child, it can ruin the atmosphere
