Celebrity chefs David Higgs and Wade van der Merve have brought such culinary renown to Meerendal Wine Estate in the Durbanville Hills that eating at any of their three restaurants is a treat. For fine dining though, Wheatfields, in the original manor house of the estate, is magnificent. Start with gnocchi with porcini or goat's cheese with peppers. The pork belly with smoked apple mash, lemongrass, and brown butter is fragrantly wonderful as a main dish. Wade's reputation as a confectioner is visible in each dessert; ask for the "busy plate of chocolate" to see why. Dining in the Barn & Lawn restaurant (open only for the Sunday family buffet) or the casual Deli is equally recommended. They also run a culinary academy, which means that many of the servers are chefs-in-training.
