Empire Cafe

¢-$$, Cafe, False Bay

Fodor's Review:

A picture window overlooks the surfers' beach, and folks will visit barefooted with sand still between their toes. The food is unexpectedly good, even if the service isn't. The lamb rump steak is fabulous: it's served on sautéed spinach with chickpeas, rooibos-tea-soaked raisins (rooibos is a Cederberg mountain plant), garlic butter, and eggplant, with garlic aioli on the side. Also popular is the updated French toast with Thai-flavored prawns in caramelized lemon-scented honey with cumin. The café's confectionery skill is renowned, and people visit just to buy bread and pastries. As desserts go, they're pushing the envelope with a chocolate-chili cake and a mocha-pecan cake. The coffee is delicious.
