Cafe Orca

Cafe Orca Review

It may be laid-back and shabby, but this tiny eatery in a former fishing village enjoys views overlooking a stretch of pristine beach. There are salads, burgers, and toasted sandwiches on the menu, but the seafood combos and baskets—which combine fish with calamari, shrimp, mussels, or chicken—are the most popular items. At R229, the seafood platter for two is probably the best bargain of its kind. Don't be tempted to order a garlic-and-cheese roll; you need to save space for what's to come. Service is friendly but can be slow.

Yesterday, 12 Feb2012, I went to Cafe Orca in 88 Beach Road Melkbosstrand for lunch. The restaurant has a nice outside area just across from the beach with a lovely view. I was fortunate enough to find a open table on the stoep. There was no one else waiting for a table so I sat down. Within a couple of minutes the waitress came to the table first asking me if I am going to have lunch. I told her yes. Without hesitancy she told me “ If you want to eat here you will have to move to the back as we do not serve single patrons on the stoep. Now if I wanted to enjoy lunch somewhere in a obscure corner I could have stayed at home. But I made the trip from Blouberg to Melkbosstrand to eat at Cafe Orca as i`ve seen the place on a previous occasion and thought that the stoep with its lovely view looks very inviting. At first I thought she was making a joke and smiled. She then became adamant that I leave the stoep and move to the back of the restaurant as this is restaurant policy. I have never been treated this way by any other restaurant and felt humiliated as all the other patron on the stoep was staring at us.
Now what I want to know is:

? What give them the right to discriminate against me just because I an not part of a group or couple ?
? What makes my money and credit card different from people that visit as couples?
? Why am I , as a single guest, not “allowed” to enjoy the same view as any other person on that stoep.
? Why did the manager send a waitress to do his/her job.

This posting will also be send to The Food Cops, Die Burger and all local community newspapers on the hope that only one of them will either post or investigate the incident.

Just along the beach from Melkbos Village is Cafe Orca. How it can be described as a little shabby is beyond me. This is without doubt the nicest, friendliest and most beautifully located restaurant i have even had the good fortune to visit. Whilst we were holidaying in Melkbos we ate there almost every day and if we didn't eat there we woiuld make sure that we popped in for a drink. The food was faultless. Perfectly cooked, of the highest quality and without doubt ludicrously low priced. the staff were all incredibly friendly and it will remain one of the enduring memories of my trip
