Fodor's Review:

Once the hunting lodge of Lord Charles Somerset, this house, dating from 1729, is one of Cape Town's oldest surviving buildings. It's been lavishly restored, but the walls remain their signature red, the result of a former, eccentric owner who chose the bold color to "ensure protection against the elements." You won't have to worry much about the elements here, as the elegant rooms are extremely comfortable and decorated with heavy drapes, dark mahogany furniture, chandeliers, and bold gilt-frame mirrors. What's more, the guesthouse is nestled in the leafy suburb of Newlands, just five minutes from Kirstenbosch and 10 minutes from the city center. The terrace is a good place to relax after a busy day, and you can even get an on-site massage in the garden or near the pool.
