The Artscape, a huge and unattractive theater complex, is the hub of performing arts and other cultural activities. Cape Town City Ballet, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, and the city's theater and opera companies perform in the center's three theaters. Since 1994 there's been a conscious effort to make the performing arts more representative and multicultural, and today there's a palpable African-arts excitement in the air. Classics are still well represented, as are more contemporary works.
