Fodor's Review

This distinctive pink landmark has been the grande dame of Cape Town since it opened its doors in 1899 to accommodate passengers just off the Union-Castle steamships. Retaining a charm and gentility that other luxury hotels often lack, the "Nellie's" lavish high tea is an institution, its glam Planet Bar is an ideal place for a cocktail on a special night out, and its staff almost outnumber guests. Rooms are decorated with fine antiques and fresh flowers and have an air of aristocracy. Though very centrally located, 9 acres of gorgeous manicured gardens and spectacular views of Table Mountain lend a bucolic feel. With an excellent spa, frequent events like wine or brandy tastings and art exhibits, and the wonderful fine-dining Planet Restaurant, there is always a reason to visit. For peak season, December–March, it's advisable to book a year in advance. Lunch or a light meal in the conservatory overlooking the gardens is always a relaxing winner, though the area can be booked out for high tea in the peak season.
