Equinox. In the Cape Royal Hotel, Equinox resembles the interior of a beautiful lacquered box, with dark parquet lit by oil lamps, a smattering of orchids, and a few pieces of Edwardian furniture. Complimentary teas, nuts, and fruit are available in the relaxation room; the changing room is redolent of Charlotte Rhys products. The chakra balance candle massage, using heated, essential-oils-scented mineral oil, leaves you in a state of balanced bliss. Treatments are great value, including the more medical skin treatments (e.g., micro-dermabrasion). You can relax at the rooftop pool deck and sky bar—well worth a visit for the views of the mountains and ocean. Tai chi and Pilates classes are held weekdays at 6 am.

Holden Manz Spa. Just the drive to this spa through the Franschhoek Mountains makes a visit worthwhile. On the grounds of a boutique hotel and wine estate, the spa is modest in dimension and style, but equal to big-city spas in its personalized service. Matis, Environ, Africology, and Moya products are stocked, and the facials are fantastic. Themed collections—unwind, awakening, quietude—group complementary treatments together and include extras like cheese and wine or lunch.

The restaurant is excellent, and you can use the pool or do a wine tasting.

Spa at Cape Grace. Impeccable service and professionalism are the hallmarks of this spa, whose paprika-and-saffron-hued spice-route motif is vibrant yet elegant. An exclusive range of locally produced teas is available. A salon next door offers hairstyling. Drawing on Khoi-San healing customs, the African Cape massage includes a full-body massage with a shea butter and snowbush flower infusion. In the center of Cape Town's downtown business district, above the commerce of St. George's Mall, Camelot Spa sparkles with crystal light fixtures, an urban oasis in taupe and champagne, complete with wallpaper on the ceilings. The heavenly, 2½-hour Wellnourishedcomplete body relaxation treatment includes a facial massage, body exfoliation, body wrap, steam, and full-body massage in the style of your choice. Wellspa is also a convenient one-stop choice for waxing or pedicures. Afterward, check out the Wellcafé with its delicious range of healthy meals, drinks, and smoothies.

Danté Wellness Spa. Focusing on facial treatments, this spa founded and run by two sisters offers personalized service and well-priced facial treatments in the unpretentious setting of a Sea Point shopping center. Specialties are its Dermalogica Deep Cleanse facial and micro-dermabrasion treatments, the Catio Vital Face treatment (pore detox, ionization, facial massage, and mask), and the Catio Vital & Lift treatment ("lifting" through muscular stimulation and lymphatic stimulation to clear toxins and reoxygenize the skin). A vertical tanning booth, manicures and pedicures, and a partner "skin renewal" business (with nonsurgical treatments like Botox and laser) complete the scene. 12 Apostles Spa. Thanks to its unique location as the only development past Camps Bay on the pristine fynbos-covered slopes, overlooking the wild Atlantic Ocean, this spa comes in at the top of many lists. Unfortunately, its largely dark indoor space doesn't profit sufficiently from its stunning situation. But you can book your massage, manicure, facial, or a romantic Moonlight Treatment for two in a temperature-controlled, glassed-in gazebo 100 meters away for some of the best views on the Cape (request a gazebo when you reserve). Many of the wraps and treatments incorporate natural, locally sourced ingredients (Cape snowbush, Cape lavender, and buchu, an indigenous medicinal herb). Indoor hydrotherapy facilities include a brine flotation pool, heated jet pool, cold plunge pool, and sauna—although it's a shame they lack views.

Angsana Spa. An oasis of decorous, graceful calm, this spa at the elegant Vineyard Hotel in the Southern Suburbs is part of the international Banyan group. The Eastern influences begin when you walk in the door: ginger tea is offered, and before beginning treatments, therapists rub your feet with hot towels. Many of the therapists hail from Thailand, and Thai, Balinese, Indian, and Hawaiian techniques are incorporated in the excellent massages (the Angsana pressure-point massage is highly recommended). The Eastern green-and-gold color scheme, views of the mountains from many of the rooms, and lovely outdoor spaces add to the serenity. Clients undress, bathe, and relax in private treatment rooms, and a half hour "calm time," with tea and fruit, is included in every session.

Surrounded by the rolling hills, oak trees, and duck ponds that typify Constantia's bucolic wine estates, this spa is all elegant understatement, with red rose petals scattered over surfaces of cream and white. Changing rooms are stocked with a generous array of Clarins products for client use. The relaxation room—complete with silver tea service and complimentary tea, fruit, and muffins—looks out to a pebble-filled courtyard and fountain. The spa, which uses Clarins, Dermalogica, and Carita products, specializes in facial treatments, but also has medical-grade peels and Botox. Hydrotherapy treatments are also available, and the Arômes du Vin treatment (a full-body scrub, massage, and lunch at one of the estate's famous restaurants) makes for a lovely afternoon.

Ginkgo Spa & Wellness at Steenberg Hotel. A warm welcome and cup of chai starts you off at this relatively small spa, distinguished among five Ginkgo locations for its attention to detail, great client care, and up-to-date knowledge. The atmosphere, though pleasant, is not memorable; the treatments, however, are first rate, with therapists asking questions and making suggestions based on your skin type and needs. Ginkgo uses Babor and South African–made Nimue products, and has a number of great combination treatments, such as the three-hour Debutante (five treatments designed for a first-time client), and the 4½-hour Mother-to-Be (full-body exfoliation, massage, facial, mani/pedi, and lunch). Golfer's massages serve those enjoying the on-site world-class golf course. The hotel pool and dining room are available to spa clients.
