Train Travel

Cape Town's train station is on Adderley Street, in City Centre, surrounded by lively rows of street vendors and a taxi stand. The station building received a complete revamp as part of the general ubiquitous infrastructure upgrade in 2010. The station services local, interprovincial, and the odd luxury lines (Blue Train and Rovos Rail).

Metrorail, Cape Town's commuter line, offers regular service but has issues with safety and is not recommended for most tourists.

National carrier Shosholoza Meyl runs the Trans-Karoo daily to Johannesburg and the weekly Trans-Oranjia to Durban. Shongololo Express runs multiday journey-tours, with its Good Hope train traveling from Cape Town through the Karoo and the Garden Route to Johannesburg over 16 days. And the luxurious Blue Train and Rovos Rail's Pride of Africa each leave weekly for Tswhane.
