This is a slick operation. Two large, wheelchair-friendly revolving cars that provide spectacular views take three to five minutes to reach the summit. The Lower Cable Station lies on the slope of Table Mountain near its western end. It's a long way from the city on foot, and you're better off traveling by car, taxi, or tuk-tuk. To get there from the City Bowl, take Buitengracht Street toward the mountain. Buitengracht turns into Kloof Nek Road, which continues all the way to a traffic circle where you turn left on Tafelberg Road. Follow signs to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. Taxis from the city center to the Lower Cable Station (one way) cost about R90. The scheduled MyCiti bus started covering the steep uphill from Kloof Nek to the lower cable station in July 2014.
Operating times vary from month to month according to season, daylight hours, and weather. To avoid disappointment, phone ahead for exact times. You can't pre-book for the cable car, but in the ever-expanding peak season (December–April), if you arrive at 10am you could wait for an hour. Several tour operators include a trip up the mountain in their schedules.
