This is Mozambique's Grand Budapest Hotel, a gorgeous, supremely elegant Grand Dame that is among the elite of the world’s famous hotels. An iconic landmark, the Polana has been overlooking Delagoa Bay in Mozambique’s capital city since 1922 and has hosted royalty, presidents, politicians, ambassadors, film stars and other celebrities plus thousands of guests ever since. From the moment you are ushered through its gracious façade you’ll be surrounded by its stylish past from the deep winged armchairs, plump sofas, and crystal chandeliers to the stately pillared ballroom. Dark-paneled woodwork, thick carpets, a king sized bed, brocade curtains, textured wallpaper and soft furnishings will lull you back into an opulent past, but modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi, coffee making machines, and air-conditioning are on-hand. The Polana Hotel sits on the edge of the Indian Ocean surrounded by lovely gardens and boasts what was once the biggest swimming pool in all of Africa with tinkling fountains and marble surrounds. Their seafood is a must. High tea each afternoon is a longtime ritual.
