The Southern Atlantic Coast Sights

Few venture this far south in Morocco, but those who do are rewarded with a real insight into the life and culture of at the edge of the great Sahara. The Moroccan southwest combines glorious beaches, arid mountains flanked by lush palm groves, hillsides scattered with spiny argan and Barbary fig cactus, and olive, almond, and orange orchards. The region's character is strongly flavored by its Tashelhit-speaking

Berbers, who inhabited these mountains and plains before Arabs ever set foot in Morocco, giving the region a distinctively rural feel.

East and south of Agadir you leave the world of beach vacations and enter Berber country. Scenic drives take you past hills covered with barley and almond trees, palm groves, kasbahs, and the Anti-Atlas Mountains themselves. In town, poke around the monuments and souks of Taroudant or shop for Morocco's finest silver in Tiznit. Keep in mind the towns are not the attraction in the region; people come here to commune with nature, admire the vistas, and get away from it all.
