Fodor's Expert Review Riad Mimouna

62, rue d'Oujda, Essaouira, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco

Tight against the northern side of the medina walls, this opulent riad sits over the water's edge, letting you have the raging sea all to yourself. Originally an old flour mill owned by a wealthy European family, it has been converted into a hotel with traditional dark carved wood and sculpted stucco. Ask for new rooms with the floor-to-ceiling sliding windows opening on to the sea; for a real treat, rent a corner suite with magnificent sea views on two sides.

PROS

  • newer rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows
  • central heating in winter
  • traditional architectural features

CONS

  • some rooms too weather-beaten
  • atmosphere more like a hotel than an intimate riad
  • patchy Wi-Fi
