Getting Around The Todra Gorge
The town of Tinerhir (also spelled "Tinghir") is the most convenient access point for visiting the Todra Gorge. It sits on the main N10 route from Ouarzazate and Er-Rachidia. To reach the gorge, take route R703 (3445) north toward Tamtattouchte, and follow the riverbed upwards for about 15 km (9 mi). The lush date palmery and rugged landscape change dramatically when steep walls of the gorge and glacial waters begin to tower above and block out the sunshine.
Long-distance buses travel here from Agadir, Casablanca, Marrakesh, Fez, Meknès, and Rabat. Buses also arrive from Ouarzazate (5 hours), Er-Rachidia (3 hours), and Erfoud (4 hours). Most buses stop on Avenue Mohammed V, on the northern side of the main square. The CTM office is on the southwestern corner of the square on the corner of Avenue Hassan II. If you don't have your own vehicle, you can catch a grand taxi to take you up through the Todra Palmery as far as the Todra Gorge. The drive takes about 30 minutes and should cost about 20 DH per person. There are also minibuses that transport locals to the villages above the Todra Gorge. You can ask to be dropped off at the gorge.
Timing and Precautions
The steep sides of the gorge can often mean that the route through the gorge itself is in shade, but the effect of angled sunlight shifting across the rock face during the day creates a spectacular sublime canvas of red and orange. Mid- to late afternoon is deemed the best time to visit.
