Petits taxis in Marrakesh are small, beige, metered cabs. A petit taxi ride from one end of Marrakesh to the other costs around 20 DH. Note, however, that the driver often won't turn on his meter unless you remind him. Note, too, if you get into a petit taxi in your hotel's driveway, the driver might ignore the meter and demand 50 DH for just about any destination.
Grands taxis are the ubiquitous old Mercedes and other large four-doors and have two uses. Most often they simply take a load of up to six passengers on short hauls to suburbs and nearby towns, forming a reliable, inexpensive network throughout each region of Morocco. Fares for such trips are very cheap; a trip from the city to the airport ramp from the main road costs about 2 DH. Alternatively, if you want a car and driver to yourself, you can hire a grand taxi to ferry you around in style; just beware that the driver might try to take you to inferior places where he receives a kickback. To avoid hard feelings at the ride's end, negotiate the fare for such an excursion before you leave. An evening trip to a restaurant, with a pickup afterward, might cost 100 DH.
