Here proprietor Hamid Hakim, brother of a university lecturer in 16th-century English literature (whose linguistic and oratorical skills he seems to share), gives an impeccably polished, humorous, and erudite presentation of Moroccan rugs and carpets as well as the architecture and traditional life of a stunningly gorgeous Moroccan town house. This 14th-century medina palace has exquisite ceilings of carved cedar restored and enriched with olive oil. Mr. Hakim's assistants roll and unroll rugs with great flair and precision while serving an excellent mint tea. Remarkably, the establishment applies no pressure to buy at all. The store takes credit cards and ships rugs overseas—and they really do arrive.
