Bou Inania Medersa

  • Address: Souk es Sebat, Meknes

Fodor's Review:

Begun by the Merenid sultan Abou el Hassan and finished by his son Abou Inan between 1350 and 1358, the Meknes version of Fez's residential college of the same name is arguably more beautiful and better preserved than its better-known twin. Starting with the cupola and the enormous doors on the street, virtually every inch of this building is covered with decorative carving or calligraphy. The central fountain is for ablutions before prayer. Go upstairs to visit the small rooms that overlook the courtyard. These housed the 60 theology students who lodged here. The rooftop terrace has the city's single best view of Meknes's medina.
