Sahrij Medersa

  • Address: Andalusian Quarter, Fez

Fodor's Review:

Built by the Merenids in the 14th century, one of the medina's finest medersas is named for the pool (sahrij) on which its patio is centered. The cedar carvings here seem a particularly rich chocolate color late in the afternoon, and the birds roosting in the eaves seem especially numerous. The medersa provides rooms for Koranic studies sponsored by the Kairaouine Mosque; listen to the sound of students chanting verses from the Koran from rooms over the central patio.

  • Cost: 20 DH
  • Open: Daily 9-1 and 3-6:30
