The Petra by Night candlelit walk of Petra is atmospheric. Strolling through the Siq as shadows play on the canyon walls allows you to appreciate another side of the magnificent carved city. Music is played on traditional instruments such as the rababa. The two-hour event occurs Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 8:30 pm. Check for availability at the Petra visitor center. It's recommended to do this first, if you arrive in the evening, and then go back and do a thorough visit the next day; it can seem anticlimactic if you already know what to expect. Keep in mind that the walk through the Siq to the Treasury is about 1 km (½ mile), downhill on the way in, and back up the same route out; there are no carriage rides at night.
