This colorful, loud, boisterous market is the culinary heart of West Jerusalem, where the city shops for the best fruit and vegetables, pickles and cheeses, and fresh fish and poultry. The busiest days are Thursday and Friday; the market is closed on Saturday, along with the rest of Jewish West Jerusalem. Combine your visit with a bowl of soup or hummus in the neighborhood, or grab a cup of excellent coffee at the many cafés. In the evenings, the vegetable stalls close and the bars sprawl out into the alleyways. Before you fill your baskets and bags, stop in at the wonderful boutiques and shops scattered throughout the market. On summer evenings, there's also live music.
