Off Jaffa Road, near the commercial Clal Center, is the produce market Machaneh Yehuda, a block-long alleyway that becomes a blur of brilliant primary colors as the city's best-quality fruit and vegetables, pickles and cheeses, fresh fish and poultry, confections, and falafel await inspection. The busiest days are Thursday and Friday, when Jews shop for the Sabbath; the market is closed on Saturday along with the rest of Jewish West Jerusalem. Combine your visit with lunch or a snack at one of the many Middle Eastern restaurants in the neighborhood, or grab a cup of excellent coffee at a Western-style café.
