Fodor's Expert Review Racha

$$ Center City Russian

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Lily and her brother Israel gave up their day jobs to recreate the recipes handed down by their mother, Tina, who hails from the Racha region of Georgia. Most nights there is a traditional banquet, or supra, that culminates in the host raising a glass over a ram's horn filled with wine. For starters, try the kinzmary (strips of chicken breast in a ground nut sauce) or the adzhazhili (roasted eggplant with onion and pomegranate). Move on to a plate of softball-sized meat dumplings known as khinkali, as delicious as they are addictive. Distinctive pastries include pancakes stuffed with meat and served with a spicy green plum sauce. Wash it all down with chacha, homemade Georgian grappa.
