The old landmark Windmill Hotel was gutted and reinvented in admirable taste. The well-lighted, golden-marble lobby—with potted palms, brightly colored armchairs and cushions, and touches of leather—augurs well. Guest rooms are very compact, but burgundy drapes and cushions and colorful accents in the bathrooms offer some compensation. Ask for a room with a view. The chain has designated the Royale as its cultural flagship: Chopin and champagne for breakfast, art in the dining room, live jazz, and more. The location is good, too: a 15- to 20-minute walk from the city center or the Old City. Pros: free culture and drinks; tasteful decor. Cons: small rooms; pricey for what it is.
