Columns, arched doorways, and windows in Jerusalem stone all frame ethereal views of Mt. Zion and create attractive nooks filled with wall hangings, Armenian tiles, and plants. The core of the hotel is a 19th-century building that later served as a British hospital. A new wing was added in the 1970s, but the older "Citadel" rooms are more interesting and roomy. While the architectural adaptations are inspired, the decor in some rooms suffers from clashes of colors and patterns. The beautiful pool area enjoys views over the Hinnom Valley; the Turkish steam bath spa complex, decorated with traditional blue tiles, is a great addition. Pros: wonderful aesthetics in public areas; inviting pool area surrounded by flowers and greenery; easy walk to Old City. Cons: staff could be cheerier; pricey.
