Fodor's Expert Review El Gaucho

$$$ Center City Argentine

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Red meat reigns at this chain Argentinian grill, and the chef here knows how to cook it. The stone building is a little hard to find, but once you're inside you'll find a cozy space with dramatic arches, flagstone floors, beamed ceilings, and wooden tables. Nibble on juicy chicken wings or flaky empanadas while you wait for your steak: try the entrecote or the chorizo (don't confuse this tender sirloin with the spicy sausage of the same name, which is also available albeit without pork) with a parsley-based chimichurri sauce. A house specialty is the slow-cooked asado, grilled boneless beef ribs. There's a children's menu, as well as several dishes to make vegetarians happy.
