One of the pioneers of the Negev winemaking scene, Erez Rota lives and works on a secluded ranch that's worth a stop. Since beginning to make wines over a decade ago, Rota's wines have gained recognition for their complexity and sophistication—all made in an incredibly rustic, mildly hippie-dippie setting. Call in advance to arrange a tasting (try the Yael, a nuanced Cabernet-Merlot fusion) accompanied by a selection of local Negev cheeses. An accomplished artist, Rota has created a free-form sculpture garden around the property, punctuated by his metal creations. He'll tour you around the property and tell you the story of how a Tel Aviv artist became one of the Negev's winemakers to watch.
