Orchid Reef Review

Formerly the Reef Hotel, this recently renovated, beachcombing property is one of South Beach's newest stars. One of the only hotels with direct ocean frontage, the Orchid Reef has been redone with a nod to modern design without forgoing the easy, beachy pace that typifies the Eilat experience. Rooms, most with balconies, display a smart, modern color combination of sea blue and taupe, and decks are floored with beautiful wood planks instead of Eilat's typical poured concrete. Unlike many Eilat hotels, Inernet is free in the lobby and the rooms, and long-distance calls to the United States are also gratis. Flat-screen TVs, king-sized beds, a sleeper sofa, and a refrigerator for stashing drinks are also standard. Even if you can't afford the NIS 1,900 for a suite, ask a hotel staff member to show it to you; the incredible balcony and views are unforgettable. The wood-planked pool (though unheated in winter) feels beautiful and intimate, leading to the beach where chairs and umbrellas are provided for hotel guests. The beach's Surf Center offers equipment and lessons, contributing to the hang-loose, yet refined, vibe. If you need your fix of mainstream Eilat—and we're not sure you will—free shuttles leave to and from the hotel six times daily. Note that though rates are listed as high, midweek and weekend special deals are often available.
