Fodor's Expert Review El-Beshmo Lodge
Bawiti, Giza, Egypt
Occupying a peaceful spot at the mouth of a gorge and overlooking the palm groves, this hotel is named after Bawiti's central hot spring, which feeds its tiny pool. Constructed of local reddish stone blended with ochre-painted walls, the hotel embraces a sloping courtyard with a blossoming garden. The rooms have serviceable, if careworn, furnishings. Bathrooms are small with wet showers (shower basins but no curtains). There's a relaxing indoor public area with local carpets and comfy seats, but most people prefer to spend evenings in the warm air of the cozy courtyard.
PROS
- the courtyard is a great place for conversations with fellow travelers, as it is cool in summer and sheltered from the wind in winter
- the restaurant serves simple but delicious local cuisine
- the hotel's (murky, but therapeutic) plunge pool is very private
CONS
- room furnishings and paint need some attention (everything is clean but worn)
- cracks in some walls at the back of the property
