The Middle Nile Valley

Middle Egypt has a slew of extremely interesting monuments dating from all periods of Egyptian history. The major sites in the area that are easily accessible are the Middle Kingdom tombs of Beni Hasan, the New Kingdom town-site and tombs at Tell al-Amarna, the Greco-Roman tombs and catacombs at Tuna al-Gebel, and the Greco-Roman remains of al-Ashmunayn. Beni Hasan, al-Amarna, and Tuna al-Gebel are the most worthwhile sites, though al-Ashmunayn is intriguing if you are interested in more Classical-style remains.

You can visit almost all the Middle Valley sites in one to two days. Al-Amarna is best done on its own, and Beni Hasan and Tuna al-Gebel are easily combined if you rent a taxi for the day. You could also combine al-Amarna and Beni Hasan in a day if pressed for time. Take plenty of food and water with you, as, for the most part, there is none at the sites.
