Neopharaonic ostentation squeezed into a small parcel of Nile real estate that has been developed to within an inch of its life—that's the St. George. The hotel is known throughout the region for its excellent cuisine and the profusion of colored marble in the lobby. It's exceedingly popular with Asian tour groups because of the high quality of the facilities and service. Standard rooms welcome guests with royal-green fabrics and honey-toned woods in classical lines; high-grade carpet; heavy, room-darkening drapes; sturdy, elegant seating; deep mattresses spread with crisp linens. Those with Nile views have balconies and graceful lotus-motif wrought-iron railings. New Royal Club rooms change the color scheme to sumptuous ruby fabrics; minimalist mahogany woods; silver-tone detailing; and bathrooms with a grown-up playground of marble surfaces, jetted showers and tubs, and "intelligent" toilets.
